You can travel to Lugano from Geneva either via Luzern or Zurich with the same travel time (5.36 hrs). Travel via Zurich is a little more expensive.
Geneva to Lugano via Lucern CHF 358 First Class; CHF 216 Second Class (one way)
Geneva to Lugano via Zurich CHF 394 First Class; CHF 238 Second Class (one way)

TIP: Buy a Train Ticket for a Day with your half fare card and pay only CHF 60 (one way)
Travel Arrangements
1. There are no reservations needed to travel from Geneva to Lugano whether on first or second class train.
2. In choosing your route to Lugano, you may wish to consider not only the travel time but the number of stops and transfers for each trip.
Hotel Accommodation
There are many hotels right after the Lugano Train station which are proximate to the city center itself.
Moving around
1. If you are moving around with a heavy load, there are lockers at the Lugano Train station. Big locker would cost CHF 8.00 for one day. Smaller lockers will cost CHF4 to 6 per day. Lockers may be used for another 2 days (max of 72 hours). Thereafter, contents will have to be taken from the concierge counter for a fee.
2. There is a telepheric train from the train station going down (3 minutes ride) to the city center’s main shopping area for CHF 1.10 per ride. Train schedule is every 15 minutes. You can also walk down.
3. Mini train that goes around Lugano lake is available at CHF 9 per person. Ticket will allow you to get off and to hope into the next train using the same ticket within the same day. Take the mini-train in front of the lake (right in front of Burger King).
What to see
1. Swiss Miniature which is just two train stops after Lugano station (10 minutes). Gate fee is CHF 15 per person. You can bring in food but there is a snack bar inside. Before reaching the Swiss Miniature gate, there is also COOP and DENNER where you can buy your stuff.
2. Don’t foget that there are also telepheric rides to the two other mountains in Lugano.
